TRIBECA: KID ZONE PROPOSAL
The Board Members of Washington Market Park, in conjunction with other community groups in Tribeca, seeks a solution to the dangerous traffic volumes and speeds on Greenwich Street between Harrison and Warren Streets.
This 5-block corridor is a locus for families, schools and children’s’ activities in Tribeca. We want the City to create a Kid Safety Zone on Greenwich extending from Harrison to Warren Street to enhance safe movement for the thousand or more children who cross these intersections daily.
Of particular concern are the crosswalks at Duane Street which lead to the entrance of Washington Market Park. Drivers, many of them speeding, routinely violate the legal right-of-way of children, parents and other caregivers and pedestrians crossing at this intersection.
The pending development of Sites 5A and 5B will bring even more traffic to Greenwich Street, further endangering our children. We fear it is only a matter of time until tragedy strikes.
We therefore ask for Councilmember Gerson’s active support in developing and implementing traffic-engineering strategies to reduce the dangers from motor vehicle traffic and make our community a safe place to walk and play.
